Chelsea plotting transfer raid on Ligue 1

Gianelli Imbula (Marseille)Chelsea are considering a January swoop for Marseille midfielder Gianelli Imbula, according to reports from The Express.

The French international only joined the Ligue 1 giants from Guingamp over the summer in a £6.3m deal, and has been mightily impressive since his arrival.

Blues chief Jose Mourinho was keen to draft him in during the last transfer window, but as his interest cooled Marseille swooped.

However, ‘The Special One’ Is ready to make a move this winter and is confident that he can persuade the Mediterranean outfit to part with the 21-year-old.

The Portuguese coach is willing to spend up to £25m to push through a deal, a sum that would mark a significant quick profit for Marseille.

The Belgian-born ace was eligible to play Congo, but instead opted to pursue his career with the French set-up.

If Imbula were to join Chelsea he would be following in the footsteps of Didier Drogba.

The Ivorian joined Marseille from Guingamp where he stayed for one season before completing a big money move to Stamford Bridge in 2004.

Imbula was voted as the player of the year in Ligue 2 last season as he helped his former club to secure promotion to the top flight.
