Chelsea prepare January spending spree

Gianelli Imbula (Marseille)

Jose Mourinho is eager to strengthen his Chelsea squad in January, and will spend £50million on Marseille midfielder Giannelli Imbula and FC Porto defender Eliaquim Mangala, according to the Metro.

The Special One is not content with his current crop and believes he needs additions across the pitch if he is to re-establish the Blues as a European superpower.

The French duo are both capped internationals, Imbula at youth level, and would provide Jose with the kind of experience he craves. Centre-back Mangala was a target for Manchester United in the summer, but negotiations broke down as the Red Devils were unwilling to pay the buy-out clause, which is reported to be around £37million.

However, the Chelsea staff are confident they can bargain a better arrangement, and Mourinho will call on his Portuguese contacts to negotiate the price of Imbula down to about £25million.

Both youngsters will doubtless have the potential to develop into star players with the Londoners, but supporters might hope the Special One addresses the more urgent issue of striking options at Stamford Bridge.
