The Blues had identified the Manchester United striker as their priority target, but manager Jose Mourinho has grown frustrated at how a deal has still not happened.
The former Real Madrid boss is set to turn his attention to Eto’o, who worked under Mourinho during their time at Inter Milan. The pair won the Champions League together in 2010, and the striker could play in the competition for the Blues should they give up on Rooney.
A source inside the club said that Chelsea were just “a few days” away from giving up on Rooney, with a move for Eto’o looking much easier. The Cameroon star has been put on the transfer list by club Anzhi Makhachkala, as they look to raise some funds.
Eto’o would have to take a massive pay cut to move to Stamford Bridge, with the 32-year-old currently earning £14million-a-year AFTER tax. But reports have suggested the striker is eager to take the cut in order to push forward a move to Chelsea.
Chelsea face Hull on Sunday, with current forwards Fernando Torres, Demba Ba and Romelu Lukaku battling for a first team place.
Would Chelsea fans be happy to see Eto’o join their club? Is he still up for the challenge of Premier League football?
