Chelsea ready to make £40m striker swoop

Manchester United Striker Wayne RooneyChelsea are willing to up their offer for Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney to £40m, according to reports from The Telegraph.

The England international is said to have grown frustrated with life at Old Trafford after being dropped for a number of big games last season under former boss Sir Alex Ferguson.

Despite new chief David Moyes being keen to reinstate the striker into the staring XI, Rooney himself is ready to move on.

Chelsea are one of the few English sides that can afford to sanction a deal, and are willing to spend big to lure the 27-year-old to London.

An initial offer in the region of £25m was knocked by the Red Devils, but Jose Mourinho is happy to increase the proposed sum significantly to force through a switch.

It is thought that around £40m may enough to fore the Premier League champions to sell, as they look to press ahead with possible moves for Cesc Fabregas and Gareth Bale.

Rooney currently has two years remaining on his contract with United, and earns in excess of £200,000-per-week.

The likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City have also been linked with moves for ‘Wazza’.

Would a move to Chelsea make sense for Wayne Rooney? Or is he better off staying at Old Trafford?
