Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is ready to up his efforts to land Benfica’s Nemanja Matic, by sending assistant coach Jose Marias on a Sunday trip to scout the midfielder, according to reports from the Daily Mail.
The Serbian ace was a Blues player up until a few years ago, but left the club as a part of the deal that took David Luiz from Lisbon to London.
After failing to make the grade at Chelsea, Matic has flourished in Portugal and is now thought of as one of European football’s leading defensive midfielders.
Clubs from across the continent are believed to be monitoring his progress – including Manchester United, Manchester City and Liverpool – but Mourinho is hopeful that he can seal a deal for the Eastern European star.
Matic is expected to feature in Benfica’s weekend clash with Porto – one of the league’s biggest fixtures – and ‘The Special One’ is ready to issue his right-hand man the task of assessing his potential.
Despite having endured a tough time at Chelsea, the 26-year-old is rumoured to be open to a return, and is keen to prove himself in the Premier League.
A deal could open the door for Michael Essien’s exit, with the veteran Ghanaian attracting interest from MLS sides.
