Chelsea’s hopes of agreeing a summer deal for Vitesse Arnhem midfielder Marco van Ginkel have been handed a boost, after Ajax admitted that they may be unable to rival the Blues’ interest.
The Londoners are believed to be tracking the 20-year-old, who has developed into one of the Eredivisie’s top young talents over the course of the last year.
New Stamford Bridge chief Jose Mourinho is said to be keen to usher in a new generation of stars at Chelsea, and sees the £8.5m rated midfielder as somebody who can develop into a world-class player.
It was thought that Dutch giants Ajax may oppose any potential interest, and that van Ginkel could be tempted by their offer, which would allow him to stay in his homeland ahead of the 2014 World Cup.
However, the Amsterdam outfit’s general manager, and former Arsenal hero, Marc Overmars says that competing with Chelsea is unrealistic:
“Ajax were very interested in van Ginkel and we were willing to go quite far,” he is quoted by The Mirror.
“But if we have to compete with one of the big clubs from England it is always going to be difficult for us.
“We cannot beat Chelsea’s financial resources.”
Chelsea have already been active in the transfer market, securing a deal for German winger Andre Schurrle.
