Chelsea reject bumper £34.5m bid for star

Chelsea's David Luiz celebrates his goal against Aston Villa

Chelsea have rejected an official offer from Barcelona for defender David Luiz, and have told the Catalan giants not to return with an improved offer, according to the Daily Mail.

Barcelona’s bid of £34.5million was rejected out of hand by Chelsea on Wednesday, who now fear they may face a battle to keep the Brazilian defender at the club.

Barca have made Luiz their number one defensive target, and although they’ve had an initial offer rejected, they are not expected to give up straight away, despite Chelsea and Jose Mourinho stating Luiz is not for sale at any price.

Barca remain adamant Luiz wants to complete the move, but have identified Liverpool centre back Daniel Agger as their back up option.

Liverpool have confirmed they are yet to receive any official offer for the Danish centre back, while also revealing any potential offer made would be rejected outright.

The 28-year-old signed a long term contract at Anfield only last summer, and feels a tremendous amount of loyalty to the club after they stood by him through various injuries. Although should Barca persist with a bid, a move to the Nou Camp may prove difficult to turn down.

Luiz remains the number one target however, and Barca remain confident of striking a deal.

There had been suggestions that Luiz’s maverick playing style would not fit into Jose Mourinho’s style of play, but the Chelsea boss has been adamant since his return to Stamford Bridge that the Brazilian is an integral part of his plans.
