Chelsea right to sell £87m duo – club hero

John Terry believes that Chelsea’s decision to sell both Juan Mata and David Luiz in 2014 for a combined fee of around £87m was the right thing to do with the duo not up to scratch at the time.

The Blues offloaded the Spaniard to bitter rivals Manchester United in a £37m deal in the January window, while the defender exited during the summer in a somewhat shock £50m switch to Paris Saint-Germain.

The decisions to do so have been questioned in recent times, though, with Mata having shone for his new side – he scored a double against Liverpool over the weekend – while Luiz helped his new team to knock the Blues out of the Champions League – scoring in the process.

However, Terry – the Premier League leaders’ captain and a legend at Stamford Bridge – believes that Jose Mourinho was right to let them both leave west London:

“You look at some of the world-class players we’ve had, Juan Mata, David Luiz, players like that who’ve left the club,” he is quoted by The Metro.

“He’s seen something — I don’t know what — to let those big players go. He also knows when players take their foot off the gas.”
