The German could be considered surplus to requirements at the Bernabeu following the club’s capture of Real Sociedad midfielder Asier Illarramendi for £34million.
Jose Mourinho remains on good terms with his former player, and is in the market for a defensive midfielder to bolster his squad.
Spaniard Oriol Romeu has already left to join Valencia on a season long loan, while John Obi Mikel has been linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge this summer. David Luiz filled the defensive midfield position to superb effect last season, but Mourinho has insisted he sees the Brazilian as a centre back.
Real Madrid are said to be demanding £2omillion for the 26-year-old, who is set to cost around £4million a year in wages.
Chelsea were thought to be pursuing Italian midfielder Daniele De Rossi, but look to be facing competition from Fiorentina for the 30-year-old’s signature. Add that to the fact that Khedira is four years younger and has previous experience of working with Mourinho, and it appears that the Blues would be in pole position to land the German.
Mourinho has remained tight-lipped about his transfer targets this summer, previously insisting Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney was his one and only target.
