Chelsea have been linked with an audacious summer move for Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo, according to the Daily Mirror.
Ronaldo’s future at Real Madrid has been in doubt for some time, with the Portuguese star indicating he was unhappy at the Bernabeu earlier in the season, despite managing 200 goals in his four years.
Real have picked up just one La Liga title during his time at the Bernabeu, with speculation suggesting he could move on in order to challenge for major silverware elsewhere.
Outgoing interim boss Rafael Benitez has claimed his successor will have £100million to spend on new players in the summer, as owner Roman Abramovich is keen for the Blues to mount a serious title challenge next season, having failed to keep pace with the two Manchester clubs this term.
If Benitez is correct, Chelsea would potentially have the funds to capture Ronaldo from Real.
Rumours emerged early on Friday morning suggesting that Chelsea will move for Ronaldo but it remains to be seen whether or not there is any truth in the reports, although some bookmakers have slashed their odds on Ronaldo joining Chelsea and at least one has suspended betting on a potential summer transfer.
Chelsea are expected to appoint current Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho in the summer for a second spell in charge at Stamford Bridge and the former Blues boss is believed to have a strained relationship with the gifted forward, making it unlikely that Ronaldo would follow his compatriot to Chelsea.
Ronaldo has also previously indicated he would only move to former club Manchester United if he was to return to the Premier League.
The Old Trafford side are almost certain to make a bid should it become clear that the Portuguese star is available for transfer in the summer, although Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement as United boss could see Ronaldo change his stance on a switch to another Premier League side.
