The Blues have been pursuing the Red Devils star all summer, after it emerged that he was willing to leave Old Trafford.
Despite having multiple moves for his signature knocked back by United, Jose Mourinho’s eagerness to secure a deal has not been deterred.
As a result, he is ready to make one last offer for Rooney, but only after the two clubs have played on Monday night.
‘The Special One’ – who is set to steal Willian from under the noses of local rivals Tottenham – says that he is still looking at ‘Wazza’, and that he believes the Englishman will be the final piece in his Chelsea puzzle:
“Let’s see. We make the bid and they say no again, what do we lose? One email?” He said.
“We are going to get a maximum of two players in this transfer window, so if we get the second piece it will be the final piece.”
To fund deals for Willian and Rooney, Mourinho may opt to sell Juan Mata.
The Spaniard is said to be attracting interest from Manchester United, Tottenham, Arsenal and Liverpool.
