Chelsea set to replace petulant star with £42.2m strike ace

Chelsea are set to step up their pursuit of Edinson Cavani in January with Diego Costa’s future at the club looking bleak, according to reports from BuzzSport.

The Spaniard was once again the subject of controversy over the weekend when he refused to join in with the team’s pre-game warm-up after being dropped from the starting XI for the Spurs clash before throwing his bib in Jose Mourinho’s direction after being overlooked as a substitute with the game tied in the second 45 minutes.

Ex-Chelsea goalkeeper Mark Bosnich believes that his actions mark the “beginning of the end” of his time in London, and reports suggest that Cavani is the player the Blues want as a replacement.

The Uruguay international has been linked with a move away from Paris Saint-Germain for much of the past two-and-a-half-years after struggling to cement himself as a guaranteed starter with Zlatan Ibrahimovic also at the club.

It’s understood that PSG want £42.2m for their man, which Chelsea could match as they look to repair the damage sustained in a disastrous opening 14 Premier League matches – Mourinho’s men are just five points above the relegation zone.
