According to reports, Chelsea are one of three teams who have been offered the chance to sign Robert Lewandowski, but they should really be going for Mauro Icardi.
After recent reports suggested Bayern Munich could look to offload several stars this summer, Bild are now claiming (via Sky Sports) that Chelsea, Manchester United and PSG have all been given the chance to sign the goalscoring machine.
The Polish international, who has eclipsed 20 league goals in six of his last seven seasons in the Bundesliga, is being offered around by his agent, Pini Zahavi.
While Lewandowski is of course a world class player, the Blues would be much better of hunting Inter Milan’s Icardi.
The San Siro club are set to announce the signing of striker sensation Lautaro Martínez, which could pave the way for Icardi to leave the club.
The feisty striker is much younger than Lewandowski, who will turn 30 next season, and Chelsea fans loved the idea of swapping him for Alvaro Morata when polled about a recent transfer rumour.
If Roman Abramovich and Chelsea are serious about rebuilding for the future, then Icardi could be their number nine for years to come, and the Diego Costa replacement they’ve been crying out for.
Every club needs one. That player that every rival fan despises, that player that lives on the edge, that player knows every trick in the book.
For three years, that man at Stamford Bridge was Costa, who grabbed 52 Premier League goals in 89 appearances. Fans were hopeful that Alvaro Morata could replace the gaping void left by his fellow Spaniard, but the new number nine did not live up to expectations.
Morata struggled with back injuries for large parts of the season, and went through a torrid run of form after Christmas that saw him go 13 games without a goal.
Having seemingly lost his place to Olivier Giroud, it would be no surprise if the Blues cut their losses with Morata this summer, and Icardi would be an immediate upgrade.
The 25 year-old, who is not going to the World Cup this summer over concerns about his behaviour, scored 29 times in 34 Serie A games last season, including a vital penalty on the last day of the season to help his side pinch Champions League qualification away from Lazio.
Icardi is strong, powerful, and will win anything and everything in the air, but most importantly he has that killer instinct that all strikers need, the same killer instinct that Costa had in abundance.
