As reported by Spanish outlet AS, Chelsea have tabled an opening bid of £55m for Inter Milan striker Mauro Icardi after the striker's impressive form for the Italian side.

What's the story?

With Michy Batshuayi failing to convince Antonio Conte he's of the standard required at Stamford Bridge, Olivier Giroud seen as a back-up option and Alvaro Morata scoring just one goal in 2018, the striker position is one that could see improvement at Chelsea this summer.

One player reported to be interesting the Blues is Inter Milan forward Mauro Icardi.

That's according to AS, who say that the striker's representatives have been made aware of a £55m offer, which they say is a statement of intent rather than their true efforts to bring him to the Premier League.

The report states that it would likely take much more than that to convince Inter Milan to let him leave.

Worth a big bid this summer?

Icardi is one of the most exciting striking talents on the continent, banging in an impressive 22 goals for the Italian giants this term, achieved in just 24 Serie A appearances.

The Argentinian international also scored an impressive 24 goals last season, proving he can find consistency beyond a fluke season, something that no doubt has alerted elite clubs.

A prime goal poacher, he could be exactly what Chelsea need this summer to boost their attacking options, perhaps with the ability to play alongside Morata as well as instead of him.

If he's available, the Blues must throw their hat in the ring to land him when the transfer window opens, even if it means a mammoth bid.
