With Alvaro Morata failing to live up to his billing at Stamford Bridge and Olivier Giroud’s current Chelsea contract set to expire at the end of this season, the Blues could find themselves desperate for a new striker come next summer. If that turns out to be the case, Maurizio Sarri would be wise to put Mauro Icardi at the top of his transfer window wish list.
Despite making a bright start to life in the Premier League, Morata has been in very poor form for a long while now and his long-term future with Chelsea must be in serious doubt. Without him, there’s no obvious choice to lead the line for the club next season.
If Chelsea are serious about making themselves one of the very best teams in the country once again, they must find a replacement for the underperforming Spaniard capable of firing them into title contention.
In the search for that player, they should look no further than Icardi.
The 25-year-old has been in blistering form for Inter Milan in recent seasons. Last time out he helped himself to 29 goals in 34 Serie A outings, the term before that he managed 24 league strikes in the same number of appearances.
Not only is the Argentina international a lethal finisher, he is technically excellent and able to be effective with both feet and his head. His smart link up play ought to get the best out of the likes of Eden Hazard and Willian at Chelsea and despite his average stature, standing at just 5’11”, he is very capable at holding the ball up.
Sarri will know all about Icardi from his own time in Italy and would be wise to bring this top talent to England before any of his rivals can win the race to his signature, which would be worth £85.5 million according to his Transfermarkt valuation.
