Chelsea defender Filipe Luis believes that his teammate Diego Costa has what it takes to win this year’s Ballon d’Or after his sensational start to the Premier League season, reports the Evening Standard.
The winner of the award will be announced by FIFA in January, and is voted for by coaches, captains and journalists involved in the game.
Costa’s impact at Chelsea following his £32million switch from Spanish side Atletico Madrid has been immediate, finding the net seven times in his opening four Premier League games.
Such a phenomenal start comes as little surprise given that the Brazil-born naturalised Spaniard was on fire for Atletico last season, his 36 goals playing a major part in the side’s first La Liga win since 1996 and their route to the Champions League final.
Filipe Luis was Costa’s teammate at Atletico before also moving to Stamford Bridge and is confident that his colleague can challenge the likes of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo for the gong.
“I will not be surprised if he is in the top five of the Ballon d’Or this year and he will deserve it,” Luis said.
“He is going to be a top scorer in England. The team play for him. He decides the games. Sometimes it’s 0-0 and really difficult and he can open these games because he smells a goal.”
