The Brazilian will follow his Blues teammates Patrick van Aanholt and Gael Kakuta from the Premier League to the Dutch side.
It will be the attacking midfielder’s second loan spell as a Chelsea player, after spending the second half of last season on loan at Malaga. Piazon made 11 La Liga appearances with the Champions League quarter-finalists, but failed to score a goal.
The move will continue to build Chelsea’s relationship with Vitesse, after the club agreed a deal to bring Marko van Ginkel to Stamford Bridge this summer, before agreeing on sending Kakuta and van Aanholt the other way.
Piazon had spoken out about his interest in staying at Chelsea and fighting for a place in the first team, but manager Jose Mourinho has decided to give the 19-year-old a chance to play first team football away from England. The Brazilian has played a total of just 160 minutes of first team football with the Blues, and looks set to wait before adding to that total.
Despite sending Piazon on loan, Mourinho will still have Schurrle, Mata, Hazard, Oscar, Moses and Ramires at his disposal to play in an attacking role during Chelsea’s first game of the new season, at home to Hull on Sunday 18th August.
Is a loan move the right thing for Piazon? Could he have fought for a place in the team?
