Signing another centre-back before the summer window closes next week is reportedly a priority for Blues boss Antonio Conte, but the west London club have become ‘exacerbated‘ in their efforts to strengthen a defence that conceded 53 times in the Premier League last season.
That has seemingly lead the Premier League title hopefuls to launch a £35million bid for the AC Milan defender – who can play at left-back or centre-half. Interestingly, Sky Sports, citing Sky Italia, reported earlier this week that Chelsea had failed in a £30million approach for the same player.
Romagnoli is seen as one of Italian football’s most promising young defenders. He’s already commanded a £21million transfer fee, having moved to the San Siro from Roma last summer, and has represented Azzurri 34 times at youth level.
Chelsea’s backline certainly requires an injection of youth. Although 21-year-old Kurt Zouma will return from injury in the coming months, Gary Cahill, Branislav Ivanovic and John Terry are all on the wrong side of 30.
