The 27-year-old’s future has been the topic of constant speculation since the end of last season, although now it appears everything has come to a head, with comments from the Rooney camp confirming the forward wants out at United.
The striker is said to be furious at comments from new manager David Moyes which inferred the striker was nothing more than a squad player at United, and simply an understudy to Robin van Persie.
Rooney was angered when his manager said: “Overall, my thought on Wayne is that if for any reason we had an injury to Robin van Persie we are going to need him. I want as many options as possible.”
The forward who has 157 Premier League goals for the club, considers himself to be at the peak of his career, and does not want to spend it on the bench at Old Trafford, feeling he has nothing to prove after nine successful seasons at the club.
The England man’s first choice of transfer destination is thought to be Chelsea, and Jose Mourinho has already had his say on the matter.
“If Wayne is a second choice for Manchester United, then the national team will be affected,” said Mourinho.
United officials had planned to monitor Rooney’s form and fitness in the coming weeks before deciding on his future, although the comments coming out are likely to move things forward, and a bid from Chelsea is imminent.
