According to the Daily Star, Chelsea boss Frank Lampard is keeping tabs on Brentford hotshot Ollie Watkins as a potential long-term transfer target following his impressive season in the Championship.

What's the word?

It is claimed that the Blues boss is keen on adding another striker to his ranks this month but could see the 24-year-old as a future option at Stamford Bridge.

Watkins' form has ramped up tenfold this season after notching ten goals in back-to-back league campaigns, so far he has found the net 18 times, per Transfermarkt, with the Bees mounting a serious promotion challenge in fifth place.

Lampard currently has Tammy Abraham as first-choice with Olivier Giroud and Michy Batshuayi failing to impress as his backup options - scoring just one goal between them in the Premier League.

Long-term man

Although it is unlikely that this move would occur before Friday's deadline, it does seem an interesting prospect later down the line.

Watkins has risen to the challenge of Championship football, so if Brentford fall at the last hurdle - likely the playoffs - then he should warrant a move into the top-flight if there are any suitors interested in him.

Chelsea appears to be a potential destination, and it would be a good place to develop given Lampard's trust in young talent as seen with Abraham and Mason Mount.

The rising talent is able to play anywhere across the front three, which only bolsters his credentials as the former England midfielder has often utilised wingers and a number ten in his system.

He's even been likened to Wilfried Zaha by Sky Sports reporter Lyall Thomas, who said this of his strengths: "Beating players with the ball, picking up intelligent attacking positions on and off it, and scoring goals" before adding "with a degree of caution and measure, of course, you could liken him to a young Wilf Zaha."

It remains to be seen what sort of fee they'd command but recent reports linking him elsewhere in the past have touted £20m, though that is sure to increase by the summer should his rich vein of goalscoring form continue.
