It’s a ‘must not lose’ game for Chelsea tonight, but another failure to win would pile the pressure even higher on Jose Mourinho.
His side are the English champions, don’t forget, and their fall from grace so far this season has been down to so many factors that it’s impossible not to wonder if there isn’t something fundamentally rotten at the Bridge.
The owner may be losing patience with the Special One, but even whilst losing 3-1 to Liverpool at home last weekend the fans were still singing his name. They’ve not forgotten just how big a legend Mourinho is at the football club, but how much longer can the dismal form continue before someone in charge decides that enough is enough?
For his own part, Mourinho has chopped and changed his lineup so much this season that he’s starting to look like a man who is just randomly dropping big name players and then reinstating them until he stumbles upon a formula that works. It hasn’t worked yet.
Tonight’s team news is in, and here is his latest attempt at picking a team that can relieve some of the pressure for a few hours at least:
Hazard is the casualty in Mourinho’s search for salvation tonight, as Baba Rahman plays at full back and Kurt Zouma partners John Terry in the centre of defence, leaving Gary Cahill, Eden Hazard and Pedro on the bench.
