Chelsea wise to use Willian to land Martial

According to the Sunday Mirror, Chelsea could have the vital bargaining chip in beating Arsenal and Tottenham to the signing of Anthony Martial, by sending Willian to Manchester United as part of the deal.

What’s the story?

The Mail on Sunday claim Tottenham and Arsenal are in the race to sign Manchester United’s Martial alongside Chelsea, but the report from the Mirror claims it’s the Blues with the upper hand.

Willian has often been linked with moves to Old Trafford, as he has a good relationship with Jose Mourinho.

The Mirror report claims Willian could move north along with £40million cash in order for the Blues to secure Martial’s signature.

Manchester United fans were annoyed by the reports that Martial wanted to leave, but getting Willian in return could certainly soften the blow.

Should Chelsea take the gamble?

There’s no doubt who has the higher ceiling between Martial and Willian, as the young Frenchman has shown glimpses of his potential stardom, but has yet to offer it on a consistent basis.

Willian has also had his fair share of inconsistencies, though would surely be the perfect fit for what Jose Mourinho wants from his wingers at Old Trafford.

Chelsea are in desperate need of a direct, creative attacker to take some of the stress of Eden Hazard, who leads his side in practically every attacking statistic this season.

With Willian nearing his thirties, losing the Brazilian along with £40m to secure a player who was touted as a future Ballon d’Or winner not too long ago seems like a no brainer.

Martial has nine goals and five assists in 30 league appearances this season, but only 18 of those appearances were as a starter.

Whether Antonio Conte is in charge at Stamford Bridge next season or not, Chelsea should absolutely take the gamble on the electric Martial.
