Chelsea's Ross Barkley has compared Mason Mount to Blues boss Frank Lampard after his impressive start to the season.

What did he say?

Mount has started this term in fine form since returning to the club from Derby County, where he spent the past campaign on loan. In his first four Premier League games, the 20-year-old has scored two goals and has an average rating of 7.55 on WhoScored.

As such, he has been selected for Gareth Southgate's England squad for the Euro 202o qualifiers against Bulgaria and Kosovo, along with Barkley.

And the former Everton midfielder has been singing Mount's praises, saying:

"I believe he will be in the [Euro 2020] squad 100 per cent when it comes to it.

"Then it is down to him but I believe he will be [in the team] because of how good he is and the things I have seen this season.

"The way he arrives in the box and gets shots away early, it is similar to Lamps. He has a really good technique with how he finishes as well. He is a brilliant player."

If Frank Lampard fails, would Chelsea fans welcome Jose Mourinho back for a third time? Find out in the video below...

An unfair and peculiar comparison

Under Lampard, Mount has stood out and certainly benefited from his manager's attacking style of play. His two goals have both been well taken, and he has been a constant offensive threat.

However, to compare him to the former England international is unfair from Barkley. Lampard is one of the best midfielders to ever grace the Premier League, and is a bona fide legend in south-west London. After all, he is the club's record goalscorer, and won everything possible with the club during his time there as a player.

Mount, meanwhile, has made just four appearances in the top flight, and is so far trophyless in his short career. He has bags of promise, no doubt, but the last thing he needs is the pressure that a lazy comparison with Lampard brings.

It is also surprising to see these comments come from Barkley. With the two said to be competing for the number 10 spot in a 4-2-3-1 formation, it is bizarre that he would give such high praise to his rival. If Mount is going to have a career at Chelsea anything like Lampard's, then Barkley can say surely goodbye to his hopes regular of first-team action.
