It has been confirmed that Reece James has pulled out of the England U21 squad with an injury.

What's the story?

The 19-year-old has never represented the U21s before, with this being his first ever call-up by Aidy Boothroyd. It comes after a fantastic season at Wigan Athletic, where he won the club's Player of the Year award, and his maiden two appearances for Chelsea this term.

However, he has had to pull out of the squad due to injury. The nature of the issue has not been revealed.

Lampard must learn from his own naivety

It is bitterly disappointing for the right-back considering he would have been making his bow for his country at this age level had he made it onto the pitch. He will now return to Chelsea and will hopefully recover sooner rather than later.

Of course, the teenager has spent most of this campaign on the sidelines with a previous issue, having broken his ankle for England's U20 side at the Toulon Tournament. He missed 10 matches during that time, and was only available once again from September 11th.

He is not the only player who has picked up another injury after returning to the action. Antonio Rudiger lasted just 45 minutes in his first match after knee surgery, and he has not played since, whilst Emerson had to be pulled off after 15 minutes against Liverpool following a hamstring problem he had picked up whilst playing for Italy.

Add on N'Golo Kante, who has been in and out of the action too, and it is becoming something of an epidemic.

Frank Lampard must take a portion of the blame for this. Due to his desire to get players back onto the pitch as soon as possible, he has put them in danger, and it therefore comes as no surprise that they have been ruled out soon after.

The former Derby County boss is adapting to the increased pressure and scrutiny of the Premier League, as well as needing to play in four competitions. The transfer ban does not help, but that should not force him to rush his players back onto the field when they are clearly not ready.

One can only hope that this latest injury is a lesson learned by Lampard.

If Chelsea are to be competitive this term, he needs to avoid such situations in the future.
