What a disappointing start to Frank Lampard's managerial career in the Champions League.

After a fantastic win against Wolves on Saturday, Chelsea would have been confident of getting a result against Valencia, especially considering the difficult week endured by the Spanish club. The Liga side recently sacked Marcelinho and replaced him with Albert Celades, and were then beaten 5-2 by Barcelona at the weekend.

However, it was Valencia who took all three points thanks to a solitary goal from Rodrigo Moreno. That was despite the Blues spending distinct parts of the 90 minutes in the ascendancy, taking 22 shots to their opponents' eight. Unfortunately, they were unable to find a way past Jasper Cillessen.

There was one positive, though: the performance of Willian. After putting in a solid display at Molineux, the Brazil international was given the opportunity to start again on Tuesday, and he grasped it with both hands.

The former Shakhtar Donetsk man was by far the Blues' strongest attacking threat, leading the way in a number of different statistics. He laid on the most key passes (five) completed the most crosses (four) and completed the most dribbles (nine). Astonishingly, in regards to the latter, no other player from either side was able to do more than two.

All of this added up to a Whoscored rating of 8.2, with the next highest player from the Stamford Bridge outfit being Marcos Alonso, who registered 7.39. No other Blue could break the seven barrier, while only the visitors' Daniel Parejo could outscore the 32-year-old wide man on the night.

Such was the quality of his showing, it seemed unfair for him to be on the losing side.

With Callum Hudson-Odoi soon to return from injury, there will be plenty of competition to take up the two spots on the flanks.

Willian has staked his claim for one of them, and more performances like this will make him a hard man to leave out.
