Chelsea’s Willian targeted by Juventus

Premiership Picks

Juventus are reportedly interested in Chelsea winger Willian.

What’s the story?

It had been reported earlier in the summer that the 31-year-old was close to signing a new contract. However, he is yet to do so, and that puts his future at Stamford Bridge in doubt with his current deal due to expire at the end of the season.

If a new contract is not agreed before January, he is free to sign a pre-contract agreement with another club and as such could move on to pastures new. According to The Daily Express, Juventus are eyeing the former Shakhtar Donetsk man and weighing up a move for him.

Best to move on next summer

Since joining the Blues in 2013, Willian has been a fantastic servant to the club. He has made 295 appearances, scoring 52 goals during that time, and was even the club’s Player of the Year for the 2015/16 season.

However, he is not getting any younger, and is not immensely popular with the fans at this point, it seems. With Callum Hudson-Odoi and Christan Pulisic available in the wide positions, they look to be the future of the side.

Having said that, they still need him at the club during the two-window transfer ban. The south-west London side have already had problems with injuries, with Hudson-Odoi and Pedro currently on the sidelines, so cover is essential – especially as Chelsea are competing in four competitions – and Willian is able to provide that.

But next summer will be the perfect time for him to depart. Lampard and co will then be free to bring in other players should they need to, meaning they can look at options that fit into the young squad the former Derby County boss has at his disposal. Willian, meanwhile, would still be joining one of the best teams in Europe in the Old Lady.

It does mean losing Willian for nothing due to his contract expiring at the end of the campaign, but it feels like the right time for all parties to go their separate ways.
