The uncertainty over the identity of Chelsea’s manager for the coming season is putting potential new recruits off dealing with the club, according to a report by the Times.
The Times claim that players whom Chelsea are interested in signing are reluctant to enter negotiations with the club while the future of manager Antonio Conte remains up in the air.
They say that the uncertainty over Conte’s future has not stopped Chelsea pushing ahead with dealings in the transfer market but they have found that players, including Nice midfielder Jean Michael Seri, are unwilling to commit to signing while there is no clear idea who the manager will be.
They report that the midfielder’s representatives have told the Blues that Seri will not be signing for the club while the identity of the manager is not certain.
Reports have suggested that Seri – despite being in demand this summer – is keen on a move to West London, and that has put Arsenal off.
However, as Chelsea dither and Unai Emery seeks to make an impression in his first season at the Emirates Stadium, there is a chance that the Blues could see the powerhouse, valued at £27m by Transfermarkt, opt for their London rivals instead.
Emery wants a double pivot in front of the back four at Arsenal next season and after the loss of Santi Cazorla has been followed by reported uncertainty over Jack Wilshere’s willingness to sign a new contract, another midfielder could be exactly what Emery is after.
