Despite arriving in the summer for £58m, Christian Pulisic has been a bystander at Chelsea under new boss Frank Lampard as the club undergoes a major transition.

The United States international was handed his first minutes in the Premier League for over a month in Chelsea’s convincing victory over Southampton last weekend, which was enough time to provide an assist, albeit an entirely academic one.

If he wishes to break into the starting lineup, he’ll need to produce plenty more impact performances.

Pulisic has been exiled from Chelsea’s previous three matchday squads in the league and understandably admitted earlier this week that his peripheral role in the squad hurts him.

He said: "Of course, you want to play, be on the field and be in the team as much as you can, and it hurts not to be there, but I’m happy I got my opportunity.

"Competition in the team can only make me better and I think that’s what makes teams, it’s guys who are maybe not the second or third man, but they are pushing each other in training every single day. That’s what a good team is all about.

"[Lampard] likes players who work very hard and show a lot in training and I just have to continue to do that, do my best in training and try to earn my position."

An ESPN panel had their say on what Pulisic needs to do to land himself a place in Lampard’s good books…

Pulisic is currently on international duty and will presumably lineup to play Cuba tonight in Washington before heading further north to face Canada in Toronto on Tuesday, the opening two matches of the CONCACAF Nations League.
