After weeks of uncertainty regarding Jose Mourinho's future as Chelsea manager, the inevitable thing happened on Thursday afternoon.

For the second time in his career, the ‘Special One’ was told by members of the club's board that his contract would be terminated.

Chelsea fans all over the world are mourning the departure of a man who was always one of them - someone most would have trusted with their lives and genuinely loved from the bottom of their hearts.

Former Blues caretaker Guus Hiddink is set to take over until the end of the season, but the Dutchman now faces a toxic atmosphere at Stamford Bridge, with fans looking to turn on players and the club's hierarchy.

With the Mourinho era at Stamford Bridge having come to an abrupt end, I look back at five moments where it all went wrong.

1 - Summer blues…

Falcao

The most obvious place to start… a disastrous summer transfer window. The squad wasn't good enough last season and overachieved, which the manager knew. He had asked the owner for a handful of major signings, but wasn't given the necessary funds - a costly mistake.

2 – Failing title-winning stars

Costa

Terrible performances from last season's star players have also not helped. While Eden Hazard and Diego Costa have only contributed to a handful of goals this season, Cesc Fabregas and Nemanja Matic have not been able to rekindle their excellent partnership, which was crucial to Chelsea's success in their previous campaign.

3 – The inevitability of time…

Terry

Chelsea's spine slowly crumbled over the past few seasons and a lack of experience has become a real problem. While it was Didier Drogba's own decision to leave for the MLS, Frank Lampard wasn't even offered a new contract. At least one of them should have been kept in a role at the club.

4 – The kids weren’t all right…

Cheek

Mourinho is also responsible for Chelsea's catastrophic season and perhaps his single greatest flaw has stopped him from building the dynasty he so desperately craved. He insisted on constantly picking underperformers instead of youngsters, like Ruben Loftus-Cheek, who were eager to get their team out of this mess.

5 - Meltdown

Chelsea

Mourinho's post-match interview at Leicester was the final nail in the coffin. You need valid reasons to use the word 'betrayal' in public, and I believe this was a big concern for the board. The bond between players and manager had disappeared, which is dangerous at this stage of the season - especially in Chelsea's current position.
