Chelsea need four top names this summer.
If the Stamford Bridge side are going to compete with both Manchester clubs, Arsenal and even the so-called smaller clubs, who all have money now – maybe not as much granted, then they need to spend big.
Conte will also have to sell a dream as he looks to re-build a crest fallen Chelsea team. Last season was a complete disaster for the former league champions and no one could have foreseen the drama at the Bridge and Mourinho’s departure materialise in such a shambolic way.
The players rallied under caretaker boss Guus Hiddink, but the damnage had been done and so this coming season is so important, as Conte will feel the pressure from all sides to hit the ground running.
With no European competition this year, the first in 14 seasons, Chelsea find themselves with only the domestic adventure to play for and ambitions of grandeur for this time next year.
Which players could make the difference? Here are four…
The 22-year-old is riding high on the back of an impressive season with Valencia and more recently with Euro winners Portugal.
It’s believed Gomes is looking for an exit out of the Mestalla after Valencia failed to qualify for Europe last season, as did Chelsea. Valencia have already reportedly rejected a bid worth in excess of 40m Euros, so Conte will need to increase that offer to nearer 60m Euros to get his man.
Conte’s desire for a box-to-box midfielder is thought to have prompted the bid, but the new Chelsea boss could lose out to Serie A champions Juventus who have also expressed an interest.
The 25-year-old Atletico Madrid forward is just what Conte needs at Chelsea.
His star was already in the ascendency prior to the Euro’s, but now that star is off the scale. Despite Atletico not wanting to sell their prized asset and the player confirming intent to remain in Spain, money talks and Conte needs this magical sparkle in his side.
32 goals last season and a place in the Champions League final has highlighted the Frenchman’s talents immeasurably, as the Euro 2016 Player Of The Tournament is said to be considering a move away from La Liga.
How much money would be involved is anyone’s guess, but Conte needs this inspirational and talented player.
Another Frenchman who could be on the move this summer is the Leicester City defensive midfielder, who really made a name for himself in the Premier League last season.
A snip of a deal from Caen a year ago at £5.6m, it will cost a minimum of £20m to prise him away from The Foxes a year on. His displays last term were a revelation with his energy and willingness to run, to cover the defence and to set up attacks, he was a constant in a league winning Leicester side.
Kante also spends quite a lot of time out on the wing, helping to protect full-backs or after noticing there’s space out wide to be exploited. The 25-year-old has reportedly turned down a new £100,000-a-week contract at Leicester and Chelsea are hopeful they can now reach an agreement for the man widely regarded as the player of last season.
The veteran Juventus and Italy defender knows Conte well and although Manchester City have enquired about the Italian, Conte is likely to get his man.
Bonucci will be devastating in defence. He reads the game so well, has the experience to organise and lead the back line if not the team and will add bite to the defensive area.
A fee of almost £50m may be required for Conte to sign his major defensive target, but Juventus are weighing up a better deal to keep him in Turin.
Bonucci, 29, has helped Juve win five straight Italian titles since joining from Bari in 2010 and has 62 caps for his country.
