Frank Lampard’s chances of staying at Chelsea are ‘looking good’, the midfielder revealed after the Europa League win.
Lampard skippered Chelsea to a 2-1 victory against Benfica in Wednesday night’s final in Amsterdam and then revealed after the game he looks set to sign a new one-year deal.
The 35-year-old looked certain to be heading for the exit door after Chelsea told him six months ago he would not be getting a new deal but they have now done a U-turn and the player is set to stay.
The finer points of the deal have still to be sorted out when the two parties sit down at the end of the season but Lampard sounds in a confident mood.
“I really hope so,” Lampard responded when asked whether he would be staying at the club. “We’re getting there, we haven’t completely sat down on it but the club have been brilliant, it looks good.”
It is thought that the imminent arrival of Jose Mourinho could be behind Chelsea’s change of heart as the Portuguese is a huge admirer of the player following his previous spell in charge of the club.
