Olivier Giroud deserves a new contract at Chelsea as he is more effective as some may think.

What's the word?

The 31-year-old's current deal expires at the end of this season, meaning that he will be eligible to hold talks with other clubs in January.

Giroud signed for the Blues in January as a back-up striker, and in total has made 22 appearances, scoring five goals and registering six assists.

This season, the former Arsenal forward has had to settle for a bit-part role under Maurizio Sarri, but after being handed a starting spot against Cardiff City, he produced two assists in a 4-1 victory.

Why should Chelsea keep him?

Failing to score a single goal during France's successful World Cup campaign does not look ideal on paper.

However, what Giroud lacked in front of goal he more than made up for in his work off the ball.

The striker is a difficult man to mark in the box and he has the ability to draw players away to make space for his teammates.

Recently, Giroud has been linking up well with Eden Hazard, and if the Frenchman can get the best out of Chelsea's star player then it is a no-brainer to offer him a new contract.
