As the ball dropped to Nathaniel Chalobah at Leicester’s King Power Stadium, the crowd held their breath. The 18-year-old defender had no right to turn this bobbling ball into a scoring chance, but once he hit the ball sweetly on the half-volley from 30 yards out, it was only ever heading one place.
Kasper Schmeichel could only stand and watch as the ball fizzed into the top right-hand corner of his net sending the travelling Watford fans wild and Hornets boss Gianfranco Zola up and off his place on the bench.
Chalobah, who is on loan from Chelsea, has impressed in the Championship this season and been one of Watford’s standout players in their promotion chase. He has just been named in the England U-21 squad for next month’s European Championship and will be facing Ian Holloway’s Crystal Palace in the Championship Playoff Final for the ultimate prize – Premier League football.
We reckon this has to be one of the best goals of the season, but you can decide for yourself below (you also might notice a certain football site on the LED boards…)
