When Premier League clubs hire new managers, the appointments are usually accompanied by unprecedented spending sprees in the transfer market. But that wasn’t quite the case when Antonio Conte rocked up at Chelsea during the summer.
Although his inaugural window saw an outlay just shy of £120million, only five players were purchased (one being third-choice goalkeeper Eduardo), and the west London club were still outspent by Premier League title rivals Manchester City and Manchester United.
A win against the latter club on Sunday has thrust Chelsea back into the title race, but it’s not been the most convincing start to the season from the four-time champions, previously suffering debasing defeats to Arsenal and Liverpool.
With that in mind and some departments still proving problematic in terms of quality or depth – such as the full-back positions, central midfield and up top – we have a simple question for Chelsea fans; does Conte need to further strengthen his squad when the transfer window reopens in January?
