Last week, Chelsea signed Everton midfielder Ross Barkley for £15million – an absolute snip in the modern transfer market for an England international with creative qualities.
While nobody can dispute the value for money though, Barkley’s presence could well cause problems for another young Englishman in the long-run – Ruben Loftus-Cheek.
It’s still early days but the lanky midfielder has been highly-rated since his academy years, has already been capped by England and is showing incredibly strong form while on loan at Crystal Palace this season.
The 21-year-old has found one goal and two assists from midfield, while averaging the fourth-most dribbles per match of any player in the Premier League.
Which, especially considering how Barkley’s progress has stalled in recent campaigns, all begs the question of who the best midfielder actually is – the recently acquired former Evertonian, or the Chelsea academy product.
