If Chelsea are to lose Thibaut Courtois, then Alisson is a fine replacement

As reported by The Daily Mail, Chelsea are lining up a big bid for Roma goalkeeper Alisson this summer, with Thibaut Courtois expected to leave the club before the start of the new season.

What’s the story?

Courtois has been on the books at the Blues since 2011 and has been a regular ever since he returned on loan from Atletico Madrid in 2014. Emerging as one of the world’s top shot-stoppers, it appears that Chelsea are resigned to losing him this summer.

That’s according to The Daily Mail, who report that the club expect him to seek a move back to Spain to be with his family.

As a replacement, the paper say that Chelsea are currently preparing a move for Roma’s Alisson, currently at the World Cup with Brazil.

They reckon he could cost as much as £65m, with £50m of that generated by the sale of Courtois.

Is this a good switch?

If Courtois is unhappy in London and wants to leave for personal reasons, there’s not much Chelsea can do apart from maximise his transfer value and bring in the most capable replacement possible. The fact Chelsea are even chasing Roma’s shot-stopper suggests that Courtois’ time in London is coming to an end.

Alisson performed excellently for Roma last season, keeping 22 clean sheets in all competitions and earning a reputation as one of the continent’s finest goalkeepers himself.

At just 25 years of age, he has the long-term potential to be a solid number one at Stamford Bridge for years, possessing both the ability and mentality to be an elite goalkeeper.

If they truly have to say goodbye to Courtois this summer, there may not be many better replacements than the Brazil international.
