As reported by Sky Sports, Chelsea are interested in signing Burnley striker Ashley Barnes during this month's transfer window.

What's the story?

With Antonio Conte's options limited in attack beyond star forward Alvaro Morata, Chelsea could do with reinforcements in the position this January with important matches ahead at home and abroad in the second half of the season.

One player the Chelsea boss is said to be considering is Burnley man Ashley Barnes.

That's according to Sky Sports, who report that the Blues have expressed an interest in bringing him to Stamford Bridge, despite not making any official contact with the Clarets quite yet.

Is he really the kind of player Chelsea should be moving for this January?

Good enough?

If Barnes made the move to London it would certainly be a surprise considering he doesn't exactly have a proven track record at the top level that suggests he could make an impact at Chelsea.

While versatile enough to play in a variety of positions, the attacker has failed to reach double figures for goals in any season since 2011/12 when he netted 11 times in the English Championship for Brighton & Hove Albion.

He may be an effective alternative option for Burnley, but even there he's struggled to show stellar form, netting just three times in the Premier League so far this term in 23 appearances.

That's not the kind of fire power that would fill Chelsea fans with confidence, especially on a European stage

Perhaps Conte should think twice about making a move for him, even if it means they are unable to sign an elite striker until the summer.
