In Focus: Carroll offers Chelsea a ‘Plan B’ but does he have the quality to shine?

As reported by The Telegraph, Chelsea are interested in signing West Ham United striker Andy Carroll during this month’s transfer window.

What’s the story?

Antonio Conte’s side are going through something of a goalscoring crisis after three consecutive 0-0 results in three different competitions and supporters are hoping the club can add more depth to their attack this January.

One player interesting Conte is West Ham powerhouse Andy Carroll.

That’s according to The Telegraph, who say that the reigning Premier League champions are lining up a loan move for the striker.

The paper say West Ham may be open to such a move in return for a Michy Batshuayi loan switch or simply to clear his £90,000-a-week salary off their wage bill.

Is Carroll really the right man to solve Chelsea’s attacking problems?

Plan B

There’s no doubt that, if nothing else, signing Carroll would provide Antonio Conte with more tactical options.

While Alvaro Morata prides himself on positioning and technique, the England international is all about strength and his aerial ability, offering the Blues a ‘Plan B’ target man when things aren’t working out in any given match.

He may not be the most fashionable of signings, but his 52 goals and 25 assists in the Premier League do demonstrate a player that can find the back of the net when fit and healthy.

In the short-term he could do a job for Conte, but fans will surely be hoping that the club can add more natural ability and a player with higher potential to their squad this January.
