According to the printed version of German newspaper SportBild, via Sport Witness, Chelsea are reportedly interested in rivalling Manchester United for the signing of Arsenal playmaker Mesut Ozil.
Well, Ozil’s Arsenal contract is due to run out at the end of the season and with no progress in talks over him extending it, he could leave either during the January transfer window or for free next summer.
With Arsene Wenger hinting that the Germany international is likely to stay in the New Year, SportBild, via Sport Witness, suggest that Chelsea could be a ‘hot candidate’ to sign the 29-year-old when the current campaign is over.
While the German perhaps hasn’t been at his best this term, the fact that a player who has provided 50 assists in 127 Premier League games could be available for nothing is obviously going to take the interest of a number of big clubs.
With Cesc Fabregas getting no younger and Eden Hazard probably more suited to a role out wide, the Blues don’t look to have that creative force in the middle of the park for the future and there is no doubt that Ozil has the ability to fill that role, and perhaps even be an upgrade on the Spaniard.
Well, presumably the playmaker is keen to leave Arsenal to not only get a decent contract, but also to boost his chance of winning trophies and he could achieve both of those things by moving to Stamford Bridge.
If continuing to live in London is something that he wants then it would also be an ideal move, but the 29-year-old will also be well aware that it wouldn’t be a popular deal for Gunners fans.
It seems as though Jose Mourinho is ready to bring in a new No. 10 with Henrikh Mkihtaryan disappointing in recent weeks, but the Portuguese boss may opt to go with Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann over Ozil, despite working with the German during the duo’s time together at Real Madrid.
