Real Madrid are interested in signing out-of-favour Chelsea defender David Luiz in January, according to The Express.

What's the word?

Zinedine Zidane is reportedly expected to bring in some new faces in the winter window in the hope of catching up with La Liga leaders Barcelona.

The Express claims that Luiz is one of those targets, while Chelsea are considering reviving their interest in Juventus wing-back Alex Sandro.

The future of Luiz remains unclear following reports of a fallout between himself and manager Antonio Conte.

According to The Express, the Italian coach was unhappy with his player's attitude following both Champions League games against Roma.

As a result, Luiz was dropped from the squad for the 1-0 win over Manchester United and Andreas Christiansen was also preferred in matches against West Bromwich Albion and Liverpool.

Luiz could be out of action for a longer spell as he is currently on the sidelines with a knee injury.

What should Chelsea do?

Conte has proven that he can be cut throat; an example being his dismissal of Diego Costa.

The striker scored 25 Premier League goals last season, but was sold to Atletico Madrid in the summer after falling out with Conte.

If Luiz is not welcomed back into the team once he returns to fitness, then it could spell the end for the defender.

Chelsea must not allow the Brazilian to leave Stamford Bridge in January, though, as it will leave them short of options at the back.

Given that the team are still fighting on all fronts, the club need as much depth as possible.
