In Focus: Conte unlikely to miss the opportunity to try and sign Carrasco

According to reports in Spanish media outlet AS, Atletico Madrid are ready to sell Yannick Carrasco and The Sun says that Chelsea could reignite their interest in the winger, who is rated at £36m according to Transfermarkt.

What’s the word, then?

Well, AS says that Atletico manager Diego Simeone has given the board the go-ahead to sell Carrasco during the January transfer window following a number of runs-ins between him and the player and the player and his teammates, with Bayern Munich and Premier League clubs likely to be among the 24-year-old’s suitors.

The Sun reports that Chelsea tried to sign the Belgium international during the summer but were unable to convince the La Liga side to do a deal, however the latest news could alert Antonio Conte, who is keen to add depth and quality to his squad in the New Year.

The report adds that while there are question marks about Carrasco’s attitude off of the pitch, there is no question over his talent and the Italian boss would be confident that he could get the attacker to knuckle down.

How has Carrasco done this season?

The 24-year-old certainly hasn’t shown the form he has in recent campaigns, scoring three goals and providing a further four assists in 18 appearances in all competitions.

That said, the majority of the Belgian’s outings in the last couple of months have come from the substitutes’ bench, and according to Squawka he has created 12 chances and successfully completed 27 of the 49 dribbles he has attempted in 12 La Liga games.

Will Chelsea try and sign him in January?

It’s difficult to say.

There have certainly been lots of rumours that the Blues could look to replace Willian in the New Year, but any additions in wide areas may depend on whether the Brazilian leaves the club or not.

However, if Conte wants Carrasco and believes that he has a good opportunity to get the 24-year-old in January, it is unlikely to be one that he will fail to take advantage of.
