As reported by The Daily Mail, Chelsea are set for a busy final few days in the January transfer window, ready to up their bid to sign Roma forward Edin Dzeko.

What's the story?

With just Alvaro Morata and Michy Batshuayi to call upon as natural strikers in his first team squad, manager Antonio Conte has sometimes found options limited in attack so far this season and adding depth to that area is a big priority this January.

One such player on the Blues' radar is former Manchester City man Edin Dzeko, currently first-choice at Serie A side Roma.

The Daily Mail report that Chelsea have already made a £25m bid for Bosnian international but are set to return with an improved offer early next week.

They do however need him to alter his contract expectations, with the club looking for an initial 18 month deal with year option, rather than the guaranteed two-and-a-half years that Dzeko is after, according to the paper.

Proven goalscorer

Wherever Dzeko has been in his career he's earned a reputation as a scorer of goals whether getting regular first team starts or not. In fact, off the bench he's often been as deadly as established talent.

At current club Roma, he's scored an impressive 62 goals in 118 appearances, also providing 25 assists in that time. This season he was instrumental in helping the Italian club reach the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League even scoring two against Chelsea themselves, at Stamford Bridge no less.

He can provide excellent competition and back-up for Alvaro Morata and play a huge part both at home and abroad as the fixtures pile up in the second half of the season.

At 31, he's no spring chicken, but could be exactly what Chelsea need over the next couple of years.
