In Focus: Giroud is striking back-up that makes sense for Chelsea

As reported by The Daily Mail, Chelsea are interested in making a late January move for Arsenal forward Olivier Giroud.

What’s the story?

It’s no secret that Chelsea have been on the hunt for striking talent this month to provide competition and cover for the likes of Alvaro Morata and Michy Batshuayi.

However, so far, the Blues have failed to get a deal for a striker over the line and there are just days remaining until the transfer window shuts.

One man they’re looking at is Arsenal forward Olivier Giroud, who is currently finding first-team opportunities at the Emirates limited.

That’s according to The Daily Mail, who say that the Blues will move for the Frenchman should their bid for Edin Dzeko fail.

The paper reckon that while Arsenal would likely be against such a move, Giroud himself could be up for it, potentially opening the door for a dramatic switch for the £90,000-a-week star.

What can he offer Chelsea?

Despite not getting a regular game under Arsene Wenger right now, Giroud is still an elite international striker and has a proven track record of scoring on important occasions whether getting a run of starts or not.

The 31-year-old has scored 101 goals for the Gunners in 252 appearances, also providing 41 assists. It’s an excellent return for a player who has often featured from the bench.

That makes him an ideal back-up option to Alvaro Morata, who will likely continue to be first choice at Stamford Bridge whatever happens in the transfer market.

In terms of last minute buys in January, Chelsea could do a lot worse.
