As reported by The Daily Mail, Chelsea and Arsenal are monitoring the situation of Manchester United defender Luke Shaw, with the defender yet to open talks on extending his contract at Old Trafford.

What's the story?

Shaw has had his ups and downs in Manchester since joining from Southampton for a reported £31.5m, but recently has found himself able to compete for places in Jose Mourinho's first team again.

The club recently automatically extended his contract by a year to the end of next season, but according to The Daily Mail, talks have yet to begun on a new long-term deal.

That's alerted Chelsea and Arsenal, say the paper, who are keeping track of his situation with a view towards potentially making a move for the full-back.

Would he fit in at Chelsea?

There's no doubt that Chelsea enjoying utilising an all-round wing-back and that's certainly a role that Luke Shaw could fulfil given his ability not just defensively but also with the ball moving into the final third.

His 12 appearances for Man United this season have shown there's still an elite player there, even if his move to Old Trafford in 2014 hasn't quite worked out like everyone expected.

A change of scenery and working under a new manager could be the fresh start he needs to fulfil the potential he showed at Southampton and signing him on the cheap in the final stages of his United contract would be a blow to the Red Devils.

Chelsea and Arsenal are definitely being smart in considering a move for the England international.
