As reported by The Times, Chelsea are interested in signing Leicester City forward Islam Slimani during this month's transfer window.

What's the story?

It's no secret that the Blues could do with more depth in attacking areas, with just Alvaro Morata and Michy Batshuayi available as natural strikers in Antonio Conte's squad.

After reported moves for the likes of Andy Carroll and Peter Crouch, it seems that the Stamford Bridge club are intent on signing a forward in January for their challenges in the second half of the season.

The Times report that the latest man interesting the Premier League champions is Leicester man Islam Slimani, who joined the Foxes for a fee of £26.5m in 2016.

The paper say that Chelsea are interested in signing the player on loan and have even already made an approach to get the deal done.

Is he the right man to provide back-up to the impressive Morata?

Odd choice

While it's always difficult to recruit elite players in January, the decision to chase Slimani certainly appears odd from Chelsea's perspective. The player hasn't exactly lit up English football since making the switch from the Portuguese top-flight and is barely even getting a game at Leicester right now.

The player has made just 12 Premier League appearance so far this term, netting just once in that time. It's not the kind of form you'd normally associate with a player linked with a move to Stamford Bridge.

Impressive at international level for Algeria, the 29-year-old also has decent scoring pedigree from his Sporting days before the move to England, but surely Chelsea can be doing better this January, even if it means persisting with Michy Batshuayi for another six months.
