Jordi Alba can improve Chelsea’s left flank next season

As reported by Spanish outlet Sport, Chelsea are interested in signing Barcelona defender Jordi Alba this summer.

What’s the story?

First team upgrades are the name of the game at Stamford Bridge in the upcoming transfer window.

With Marcos Alonso’s form throughout 2017/18 patchy and new signing Emerson Palmieri as yet failing to convince that he is the future in the left wing-back slot, the Blues could be on the hunt for an elite left-side player this summer despite already boasting that duo.

One player who would surely excite Chelsea supporters is Barcelona man Jordi Alba.

Sport report that the Blues are interested in signing him, but will have to compete with Manchester United in order to get the deal done.

The outlet also reckon that Alba would love to stay at the Nou Camp, but with just 2 years remaining on his contract, could he be set for a shock exit?

The player is currently rated at a hefty £54m by Transfermarkt.

Would he be an improvement on Alonso?

Alba had a fantastic 2017/18 season, helping Barcelona to a league and couple double in Spain ahead of UEFA Europa League winners Atletico Madrid and UEFA Champions League winners Real Madrid.

Scoring three goals and assisting eight times, he delighted supporters with his energetic forward play as much as his steadfast defensive work.

As demonstrated by WhoScored, Alba averaged more tackles and interceptions than Alonso per game, also ahead in vital attacking categories such as dribbles, key passes and pass success rate.

It’s worth remembering too that Alba is first pick ahead of Alonso when it comes to the Spanish national team too.

Bringing him to Stamford Bridge would be something of a coup and perhaps a key signing in their bid to challenge for trophies once again next term.
