If Frank Lampard makes the move from Derby to Chelsea this summer, it could also mean the Blues keep hold of promising young right-back Todd Kane, according to The Times.

What's the word, then?

The Stamford Bridge side's all-time leading scorer is a leading contender to be named the new Blues boss following Maurizio Sarri's departure for Juventus, but remains Rams manager for now.

Meanwhile, the 25-year-old who spent last year on-loan at Hull has run down his contract which expires this summer after he decided not to sign a new deal with the Europa League winners, but that may change if Lampard is to take over at Stamford Bridge.

The confusion comes because Derby have also offered the defender a permanent deal and so Lampard has his current and potential future employers locking horns for the player.

If Lampard rejoins Chelsea, Kane should re-sign

It will be playing on the former England international's mind that if he is to become Chelsea boss then he will need to keep as many players as possible given the transfer ban which is looming.

Could United be in the hunt for an £85m blockbuster signing this summer? Check out the video below...

It is a difficult decision for him to make, but realistically given the likelihood of his move to the Bridge it would be foolish to think he will be pushing as hard as he can for Derby to get the deal done.

What's more, given the transfer ban is going to open the door for youngsters to get more opportunities at Chelsea, there is a real possibility Kane's head could be turned as he should see it as the chance to stake a claim at one of England's top clubs.

The alternative is to take a deal at the east Midlands outfit where the manager's future is undecided, or at another Championship club that has offered him a deal, which wouldn't really feel like a step forward.

Lampard could hold the keys here so if he is confirmed as the new Blues boss sooner rather than later, it might well be a no-brainer for Kane to re-sign for the parent club he has been with for eight years.
