The 21-year-old Argentine has made a big impact in Serie A since his move to Sampdoria in 2011, and has continued to impress in the colours of Inter Milan, whom he signed for last year.
A host of clubs have been alerted by his showings, with Liverpool and Chelsea, as well as Spanish champions Atletico Madrid, all keen ahead of next month.
But reports suggest that the youngster is keen to play for Jose Mourinho’s Blues, with the Portuguese coach equally open to a deal.
Despite the form of Diego Costa, Loic Remy and Didier Drogba – all of whom were signed over the summer – the Stamford Bridge chief is looking to add another marksman to his ranks, with the Ivorian’s advancing years an issue.
And with interest strong, Inter director Piero Fassone recently suggested that Icardi, as well as Mateo Kovacic and Dodo – are players the club could sell:
“I’ve learned that no player is off the market in football, it doesn’t work that way,
“It’s possible to keep Icardi and [Mateo] Kovacic although there are other clubs have more appeal than us.
“I’m confident that Icardi, Kovacic and Dodo want to stay with us.
“If then a big club arrives that wants them, at some point it would be right to make them happy.”
