According to the Evening Standard, Chelsea are set to appoint Claude Makelele as part of their new backroom staff ahead of a major summer overhaul.

What's the deal, then?

Frank Lampard is expected to become Blues' boss just five years since he last played at the club.

And the all-time leading scorer at Stamford Bridge is reportedly bringing in a number of former players to help him in what will be only his second season in management.

As well as Makelele, there will also be Joe Cole, Tore Andre Flo, Paulo Ferreira, Eddie Newton and Carlo Cudicini present in various roles.

The 46-year-old Frenchman left his managerial role at Belgian team KAS Eupen at the weekend and also has experience on clubs' coaching staff in France with Paris Saint-Germain and in the UK with Swansea City.

Makelele arrival could have huge impact on Ethan Ampadu

Makelele is widely regarded as one of the Premier League's founding fathers of the holding midfield role and many still refer to the position as the 'Makelele role'.

He made 216 appearances for the Blues across five seasons, winning two league titles, one FA Cup, two League Cups and a Community Shield.

And now he comes into the club at a time when there is a young central defender/defensive midfielder on the books at Stamford Bridge who could benefit greatly from his guidance - Ethan Ampadu.

The 18-year-old has looked a little bit lost in west London and has only made 12 first team appearances for the club, playing in a variety of positions - right-back, centre-back and centre midfield, but is yet to have been given a solid run in the team or nail down a position as his own.

And now, with the transfer ban hanging over Chelsea's heads, and a potential exit for Jorginho, this could be the teenager's chance to make a real statement.

Plus, with Makelele in the set-up, who better to nurture a raw, inexperienced holding midfielder than the man who played there during a tremendously successful Chelsea generation?

There are many issues that those at Stamford Bridge face this summer, but Ampadu may be someone who can thrive amongst the chaos.
