Mauro Icardi is everything Chelsea hoped Morata would be

According to reports in Italy, Chelsea could look to offload Alvaro Morata this summer in a shock swap deal to bring Mauro Icardi to London.

What’s the story?

A report from Italian newspaper Il Messaggero claims Chelsea are chasing Inter Milan’s Icardi, and that they could offer as much as €35-40million (£31-35m) as well as Morata to seal the deal.

Morata has struggled since joining Chelsea last summer, and despite making an incredible start, including a brilliant hat trick at Stoke, has lost his place to Olivier Giroud.

The Spaniard has still managed 11 league goals despite an underwhelming season, but that’s nothing compared to the incredible hit rate of Icardi, who has netted 29 times in 34 league starts this season.

Atletico Madrid, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain are also interested in Morata, so the Blues could have plenty of suitors if they decide to cut their losses with the 25 year-old.

A young Diego Costa?

If Chelsea were seeking a cold-blooded killer to replace the infamous Diego Costa, they certainly did not get it with Alvaro Morata.

The Spanish striker is undoubtedly skilled, but his struggles with a persistent back injury and a shocking run of 13 games without a goal are definitely cause for concern.

Icardi is about as close to a direct replacement for Costa as you could possibly get, as his two most valuable traits are his clinical finishing and his insatiable desire to win.

With rumours circulating about the possible arrival of ex-Napoli boss Maurizio Sarri, it would be no surprise to see the enigmatic Italian want a few of his own big transfers brought in.

Icardi buried a penalty in Inter’s dramatic comeback to secure Champions League football on the final day of the season, and the 25 year-old Argentine has now bagged 91 league goals in his last four seasons in Italy.

If there are question marks about the mentality of Morata, then Icardi might be more what fans are looking for. His incredible goalscoring wasn’t enough to get him a spot at the World Cup due to question marks over his behaviour… starting to sound like someone familiar?

So, Chelsea fans, would you dump Morata to grab Icardi this summer? Or would you rather stick with the Spaniard? Let us know your thoughts by voting in the poll below…
